Douglas A. Freeley, MD
Dr. Douglas Freeley is an ophthalmologist at Manhattan Medical as well as a clinical instructor in pediatric ophthalmology at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center. Dr. Douglas Freeley has an interesting history as a practicing ophthalmologist, missionary ophthalmologist, and a flight surgeon.
Dr. Freeley earned a bachelor of science degree from the United States Military Academy in West Point, NY in 1969. He then attended New York Medical College where he was awarded his medical degree. After graduation, Dr. Douglas Freeley completed a rotating internship at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, DC.
From 1975 to 1976, Dr. Freeley served the United States Army as a flight surgeon in Fort Dix, NJ. After which, he returned to Walter Reed Army Medical Center to complete a residency in ophthalmology. The first position Dr. Douglas Freeley held as a staff ophthalmologist was chief, EENT service at 5th General Hospital in Stuttgart, Germany. Upon returning to the United States, Dr. Douglas Freeley completed a fellowship in pediatric ophthalmology at Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia, PA.
From 1981 to 1987, Dr. Freeley held a leadership position as chief of ophthalmology service and director of the residency training program at Fitzsimons Army Medical Center in Denver, CO. After this position, Dr. Douglas Freeley began seeing patients in private practice. However he took leave from his practice during Operation Desert Storm where he was on active duty in the US Army as a staff ophthalmologist and chief of the department of surgery.
In 1993, Dr. Douglas Freeley began a six-year stint as a clinical instructor in pediatric ophthalmology at Catholic Medical Center of Brooklyn and Queens. He left that position in 1999 to serve as a missionary ophthalmologist for seven years in Ecuador where he was responsible for the development, equipping, and staffing of two eye clinics.
Currently, Dr. Freeley is once again a clinical instructor in pediatric ophthalmology at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center. He also sees patient at Manhattan Medical. With his diverse military and non-military experience, Dr. Douglas Freeley is equipped to handle routine as well as acute eye conditions for pediatric and adult patients.
